about

Jamie Moore has been making music one way or another for his entire life. After an early childhood full of singing and humming at every conceivable opportunity, he picked up the alto saxophone in 4th grade and became a fixture in his middle school’s concert and jazz bands over the next few years. In high school, Jamie used the musical framework he’d gleaned from years of piano lessons to teach himself guitar (and some bass) and began to experiment with recording cover songs in Audacity. Performing and recording music became a constant source of relief throughout these emotionally tumultuous years, so it naturally followed that he ended up pursuing an Associate’s Degree in Music Recording at the County College of Morris, where he learned the ropes of both analog and digital music production while forging some of the most lasting friendships of his life. Jamie transferred to Ramapo College in 2018 with the goal of broadening his horizons in music and exploring more avenues of composition and production. He became particularly invested in experimenting with electronic music via various softwares and production styles, and during this time he began to produce original compositions, most notably a conceptual piece of algorithmic music based on Kurt Vonnegut’s 1997 novel Timequake. As part of his Capstone project in 2021, Jamie released his debut EP of original material, Stoneflower & Other Microsongs, a collection of three full songs and a suite of miniature songs in the style of They Might Be Giants. “Kayak” first appeared on Stoneflower and is reproduced here courtesy of Jamie Moore in collaboration with Ramapo College and The Vatican.

lyrics

Double kayaks cut down on survivor's guilt
Dying on my feet below the amber waves of silt
Wrest control away from Andy Kaufman's ghost
What else could I do to save the one I love the very most

Send me chemicals to rest my weary head
Set aside that we could wake up in the morning dead

But I don't care if we never see the shore
I will always love you more
Than is healthy for a boy my age
I can run, I can sprint and I can leap
Into 13-story windows creep
Leave my scent upon your sheets
And you will sigh, it's only me again
Kiss me as I leave again
Paddle off into the night

Something has gone screwy with the government
Stoneflower Mason Huey in the ad for Doublemint
Maybe I'll go missing in the woods tonight
If I do just promise me you won't give up the fight

Cause I don't care if we never see the shore
I will always love you more
Than is healthy for a boy my age
I can run, I can sprint and I can leap
Into 13-story windows creep
Leave my scent upon your sheets
And you will sigh, it's only me again
Kiss me as I leave again
Paddle off into the night

Assessing information with my huge gigantic brain
I built a silo out of fear and now I'm drowning in the grain
The gears of time will slow if any single drop is spilt
But at least a double kayak would preclude survivor's guilt
YEAH
